INTRODUCTION: Patients with type 2 diabetes are more prone to be diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia than general male population. Abnormalities of glucose homeostasis plays a role in causation of benign prostatic hyperplasia by influencing the proliferation rate of prostrate cells. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. To study the prevalence of prostatomegalyin patients with type 2 diabetes. 2. To study the effect of prostatomegaly and its complications with the duration and glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 100 patients attending Diabetology OP department and Institute of Internal medicine, an observational study was done for a period of 6 months. These patients were selected based on the inclusion criteria – type 2 diabetes in the age group of 40- 60 years and exclusion criteria- known case of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatic carcinoma. Demographic data and medical history were obtained from the patients and they were subjected to blood sugar estimations (FBS / PPBS), HBA1c, serum prostate specific antigen (for selected patients), ultrasound of pelvis. RESULTS: Out of 100 diabetic patients involved in the study, 51% patients had prostatomegalyand out of 51 patients with prostatomegaly, 27 patients had lower urinary tract symptoms (52%). Among patients with diabetes for a duration more than10 years, 63% had prostatomegaly. Similarly, patients with poor glycemic profile had higher prevalence of prostatomegaly compared to general population. CONCLUSION: It has become evident from our study that, the presence of prostatomegaly correlates well with the glycemic profile and the duration of diabetes with the prevalence being increased in the age group of 40-60 years

A high resolution, hard x-ray photoemission investigation of La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (0.30<x<0.50): on microscopic phase separation and the surface electronic structure of a bilayered CMR manganite

Photoemission data taken with hard x-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the bilayered, colossal magnetoresistant manganite La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (LSMO) with 0.30<x<0.50 are presented. Making use of the increased bulk-sensitivity upon hard x-ray excitation it is shown that the core level footprint of the electronic structure of the LSMO cleavage surface is identical to that of the bulk. Furthermore, by comparing the core level shift of the different elements as a function of doping level x, it is shown that microscopic phase separation is unlikely to occur for this particular manganite well above the Curie temperature.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Development of the Magnetic Excitations of Charge-Stripe Ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) on Doping Towards Checkerboard Charge Order

The magnetic excitation spectrums of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 were studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We found the magnetic excitation spectrum of x = 0.45 from the ordered Ni^2+ S = 1 spins to match that of checkerboard charge ordered La(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4). The distinctive asymmetry in the magnetic excitations above 40 meV was observed for both doping levels, but an additional ferromagnetic mode was observed in x = 0.45 and not in the x = 0.4. We discuss the origin of crossover in the excitation spectrum between x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 with respect to discommensurations in the charge stripe structure.Comment: 4 Figures. To be appear in the J. Social and Political Consciousness in Nayantara Sahgal’s This Time of Morning

The present paper deals with the socio-political issues encountered after independent India represented in Nayantara Sahgal’s novel, This Time of Morning. On the one hand, the study explores the conflict of ideas between power hungry and crafty politicians and ideal and national conscious politicians. It explicates disillusionment about the functioning of democratic institutions, the calibre of the new leaders. The erosion of moral values in politics found their articulation in her fiction. On the other hand, the novel reveals the perception of marriage of both traditional woman and new woman. In a nutshell, it deals with the theme of the conflict between idealism and materialism in post independent India’s political world and tradition and modernism in the lives of man woman relationship in the society

High temperature onset of field-induced transitions in the spin-ice compound Dy2Ti2O7

We have studied the field-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of Dy2Ti2O7 spin ice along the [111] direction in the temperature range 1.8 K - 7 K. Our data reflect the onset of local spin ice order in the appearance of different field regimes. In particular, we observe a prominent feature at approximately 1.0 T that is a precursor of the low-temperature metamagnetic transition out of field-induced kagome ice, below which the kinetic constraints imposed by the ice rules manifest themselves in a substantial frequency-dependence of the susceptibility. Despite the relatively high temperatures, our results are consistent with a monopole picture, and they demonstrate that such a picture can give physical insight to the spin ice systems even outside the low-temperature, low-density limit where monopole excitations are well-defined quasiparticles
